Review: Heart of Obsidian

Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) - Nalini Singh

HEART OF OBSIDIAN is the twelfth book in Nalini Singh’s brilliant and exciting A PSY-CHANGELING NOVEL series. It is a game changer of a book, with the Psy-Changeling world hanging on a knife-edge. If you’ve kept up with the series so far, then you’ll know how volatile the world is. All that’s needed is a single spark to launch a firestorm. We’ve been on tenterhooks for the previous eleven novels, wondering when and if that is going to happen. As the blurb says, ‘The day of reckoning is here.’

It’s really hard to talk about HEART OF OBSIDIAN without risking spoilers, so whilst I’m going to try my hardest not to venture into spoiler territory I’m also going to apologise in advance in case I go there. I really enjoyed reading the previous eleven books in this series; I loved the characters and Singh’s world-building. So when I saw a signed hardback copy of HEART OF OBSIDIAN I had to buy it. I didn’t dive into it straight away because I wanted to save it for one of those rainy book days when you need a trusty series. I’m so glad I did; once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down, and I finished it in a matter of hours. HEART OF OBSIDIAN is a brilliant and complicated addition to the fantastic PSY-CHANGELING world.

HEART OF OBSIDIAN is a little different from previous books in the series. Singh usually pairs Psy/Changeling, Changeling/Changeling, or Human/Psy. That is not the case in this book. For the first time Singh writes about a Psy/Psy pairing. I was really excited to see how things would play out in the book; what it would mean for the PsyNet and for the Silence Protocol. Singh did not disappoint me at all with how things played out through the book. There was as much chemistry and heat as I would expect from a PSY-CHANGELING NOVEL, and Singh did not skimp on the political background of the overall series either. In fact, she capitalised on it. I don’t want to go into detail in case I spoil anything, but I think that this book was one of the most exciting books in the series to read. The stakes really get raised. The ending of the book blew me away, and I’m really looking forward to book thirteen which comes out in 2014.

If you have been keeping up with the series, then you should definitely add HEART OF OBSIDIAN to your to-be-read pile ASAP. It will not disappoint you. If you’ve not read A PSY-CHANGELING NOVEL series yet, then if you’re a fan of paranormal romance with a little twist and just as much plot as romance, then you should really give this series a try.
